Our hearts go out to the victims of Hurricane Michael, who suffered from one of the most powerful hurricanes to make landfall in U.S history. MyStrongHome has been working with its Florida partner,SELF, a non-profit community development finance institution, to determine how we can help affected communities rebuild quickly and to a higher standard of resilience.

The need is great and the task daunting, but we can move quickly to fill in the gaps left by insurance deductibles and recovery funds, and get families back into stronger, safer homes. Hurricane-resistant, stronger roofs are affordable, and, by using the MyStrongHome model, cost homeowners less than standard, more vulnerable roofs.

This informative Washington Post article, “Houses intact after Hurricane Michael were often saved by low-cost reinforcements,” profiled five Fortified homes in Panama Beach following Michael. While the hurricane destroyed nearly all of the surrounding houses, these five homes remained “largely untouched,” illustrating that resilient home construction can be both effective and cost effective. These homes were built by Habitat for Humanity, which MSH is proud to call a partner.
